Finding Inspiration for your Boudoir Shoot

We find inspiration everywhere around us, from fashion magazines to music videos to real-life occurrences. Think about your most favorites things: hobbies, pieces of clothing, movies, etc. Whatever evokes emotion or feeling; it doesn’t necessarily have to be a happy feeling, it could be a thrill or a fantasy or an addiction, whatever it may be, write it down. With your thoughts and ideas, we will create an inspiration board to set a storyline for your shoot. Magazines that we browse frequently include Vanity Fair, Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, W Magazine, and European Fashion Magazines. Set up a Pinterest Board! If you are unfamiliar with Pinterest, it’s an amazing tool for keeping track of everything that inspires you. Pinterest is a free online virtual pinboard that allows you to “pin” images that you find online and share with others what you are passionate about. You can find me under @jenniferskog! ABOUT this SHOOT

With most of my shoots being on location in my client’s home, I’m first seeing the surroundings in person on the day of the shoot, so I never truly know what I’m going to get as far as light and space. As soon as my sister and I walked up the driveway, I saw an entire wall of ivy that gave privacy from the street. I immediately knew we had to take advantage of such a beautiful backdrop and create a look.

She was a bride-to-be, so I had brought lots of white sheer and lace pieces to play with. This Free People Slip was perfect for a space that wasn’t 100% private. It was sheer enough to give a tease, but covered enough to wear no one can tell you aren’t wearing undergarments!

Go for the Unexpected with your Boudoir Session

When I say I’m searching for something unexpected, this dream photo shoot is the perfect example. During our discovery call, I learned this magnificent woman is a performer who loves to dance and perform, so we knew we wanted this to be a theme throughout the shoot. She had a condo in Oakland, California, and mentioned having a basement with natural window light in her building. I had absolutely no idea what to expect, but when I saw it for the first time, my mind was flooded with ideas. We brought down the wardrobe (inspired by Queen Bey and J. Lo), turned on some sexy music, and let her do her thing. This shoot was for nobody else but herself, celebrating her journey through motherhood, survival, and everything in between.

How to get comfortable in front of the camera when you're half dressed

For me, it’s not about posing or looking ‘sexy’ for the camera. I believe our beauty shows itself most in the natural movements of our bodies. During your session, we will recreate little scenes of daydreams to capture your most genuine expressions.

Most of us get nervous when a camera is in front of our face when we are fully clothed, imagine how much more intense it feels with barely any clothes on! This is a challenge that I absolutely love taking on! (because I know it’s going to be ah-mazing!!) From the very start, we take a lot of steps to ensure you are comfortable. First, we open with a discovery call to get acquainted and share ideas. During the session, we set the vibe with some feel-good music and maybe a little cocktail or glass of champagne. We raid your closet, mix pieces from our own collection, do a little hair & makeup pampering... Let's just say, it's a good time!!

It’s rare that I will have you standing or sitting in a stagnant pose. I will be guiding you and personally demonstrating what I want you to do. As I’m styling, I’m designing with a storyboard in my mind. Each scene we style & photograph revolves around facets of your life.

I remember with one of my boudoir shoots, my client opened the door with a glass of champagne in her hand and the glass was physically shaking she was so nervous. I told her to breathe, promised we’d have a great time, and moved right on in. The shoot was amazing and after we had finished I was packing up my gear chit-chatting, and I suddenly noticed she was completely secure, standing there in her underwear just leaning against the wall talking it up. Mission Accomplished! It definitely takes the right combination of personalities to accomplish such harmony and empowerment, thankfully I work well with others :)

ABOUT this SHOOT

You know the saying, “I wish you could see what I see in you”? Showing you my perspective is my goal when shooting, especially when in a client’s home. Most often, we will see completely different things when looking at the same exact same space. How the light filters through the window, color tones, or the personal elements chosen as surroundings. Everything tells a story.

So when I got to photograph this beauty on her family ranch, I was soooo excited about all of the amazing opportunities! Most times, in an effort to get comfortable, we start somewhat clothed and eventually undress when I feel you’ve started feeling comfortable and embracing yourself. We began in her bedroom which had a big window with light flowing in, some plants hanging that I repositioned for the camera, and other personal elements.

We started on the bed, to avoid awkwardness I will start by suggesting something to do. I asked her “What is something you would normally do hanging out in your bedroom? Do you read? Do you meditate? Do you drink your morning coffee here? “Oh! I read!” And so the story begins…
